Contact Lens Solutions & Fusarium Keratitis

It is hard to believe, but the solution you use to clean and store your contact lenses may cause serious injuries, even blindness. At Pogust Braslow & Millrood, we represent consumers who have suffered serious injuries as a result of using these dangerous products.

ReNu with MoistureLoc

ReNu with MoistureLoc, a Bausch & Lomb product, has been recalled because of potentially dangerous side effects. In particular, the lens cleaning solution has been linked to Fusarium Keratitis, a rare and potential blinding fungal disease that causes severe eye irritation, may require corneal transplant and causes blindness if left untreated. Symptoms of fungal eye infection include blurry vision, eye pain, redness, sensitivity to light and discharge. The product was withdrawn from the market in the United States on April 13, 2006.

AMO Complete MoisturePlus

On May 29, 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of contact lens cleaning products, including Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Solution manufactured by AMO (Advanced Medical Optics). The FDA recalled these products because of reports of eye infections from a parasite called acanthamoeba keratitis, which is difficult to treat, may cause vision loss or blindness, and could require a corneal transplant.

If you or a loved one wear contact lenses and have suffered any of these side effects from using ReNu with MoistureLoc or Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Solution, you should immediately contact the attorneys at Pogust Braslow & Millrood. In addition, if you have any of these solutions at home, the FDA urges you to "discard all remaining solution including partially used or unopened bottles, and ask [your] healthcare professional about choosing an appropriate alternative cleaning/disinfecting product."
